Step 3: Foundation

Bobbi believes that foundation is the best way for any woman to look like she naturally has smooth, even, perfect skin. You know you have found the right foundation for your client, when it looks like her skin.

What makes Bobbi Brown Foundations so unique? They are skin tone correct meaning that they are all yellow-based as a result of Bobbi’s realization years ago- that regardless of ethnicity, naturally, all women have yellow undertones in their skin.

Remember always moisturize before applying foundation – it is the base to any foundation!

To find the perfect foundation:

Swatch two to three shades on your skin, take this from cheek to jawline and gently blend into skin with a clean finger. The shade that “disappears” into the skin is the right one. If you can’t decide between two shades– choose the warmer of the two options.

How to apply foundation:

1. Apply a small amount of foundation around your nose and mouth, two areas where the skin is often red or uneven- using a foundation brush, sponge or fingers.

2. Blend the foundation upward and outward toward the hairline.

3. If there are areas that need additional coverage (including blemishes) use Bobbi Brown’s Touch Up Stick (one of my FAVORITE products) where the coverage is needed.

The idea of oil-free vs. non

In my experience and what I have learned as a makeup artist, oil cuts oil and most foundations, I can’t speak for all, have essential oils in their products and more importantly they aren’t going to clog your pores.

If you ever feel like your foundation washes you out– add bronzer to warm up the skin or opt for a warmer shade for your skin. Always make sure your neck matches your face, if it doesn’t add bronzer to warm your skin up.

If you are unsure, go to your favorite makeup counter and asked to be matched for a foundation, make sure the makeup artist takes into account your lifestyle and what you are looking for in a foundation (example: is SPF important to you?) – take home a sample, remember: try before you buy.
