Skincare Spotlight V. 2

Skincare Spotlight V. 2
*Blend of Italian olive, organic sunflower and jojoba oils to dissolve surface impurities and makeup without leaving skin feeling tight or dry.

While Bobbi Brown is primarily known for her makeup, her skincare has been changing the game one product at a time. After being introduced to her skincare line, it wasn’t hard for me to gravitate towards Bobbi’s Soothing Cleansing Oil. A cleanser that CAN remove makeup, especially eye makeup, deserves some SERIOUS credit.

Skincare Spotlight
Happy Wednesday, everyone! I’m happy to introduce another exciting series coming to Short is the New Black today! (Drum-roll please….) The Skincare Spotlight series is something I have thought about doing for quite some time now and I’m so excited to finally share it with you! These series of posts are a way for me to share noteworthy products that I’ve either just recently discovered or have been using for a while.

In case you missed the Clarins Double Serum preview on my blog last week, feel free to take a peak now. This serum has won several beauty awards and is powered by 20 pure plant extracts and potent, high-tech molecules.  Oh and while you’re at it….be sure to check out my favorite NYC blogger, Hallie’s #30DaysofBeautiful Challenge.

Winterize Your Skin.

Winter Skincare

|1|2|3|4|

Cold weather sucks. Your skin shouldn’t, ladies. It’s time to pack on the moisture with these below zero temperatures outside. Here are some of my favorite moisturizers to help lock in the moisture whether you’re oily, dry, or have sensitive skin.

|1| Kate Somerville’s Oil Free Moisturizer is one of the BEST moisturizers for someone who wants to protect their skin from fine lines and wrinkles, but has either sensitive or acne-prone skin. This oil-free moisturizer is packed with Algae-based Pepha-Tight® to help tone and moisturize the skin.

|2|This M-61 Hydraboost Moisturizer is the perfect way to maintain moisture this winter. It contains Vitamin B5, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid to help plump and replenish the skin’s moisture level.

|3| Fresh Black Tea Age-Delay Cream is one of my favorite moisturizers by Fresh. Packed with antioxidants, this moisturizer has proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and firm and smooth the skin.

|4| The holy grail of moisturizers. Bobbi struck gold when she created this moisturizer. This product boosts natural collagen production and most importantly, improves the skin’s ability to hold in moisture. Ideal for someone who is on the dryer side.

What’s your favorite moisturizer to get through these harsh winter conditions?

(16) WHAT’S IN HER BAG?

Before I explode with excitement for my 16th “What’s in HER bag,” I have to apologize for the blogging hiatus I’ve been on for the past month. In case you didn’t know, I just recently moved to the best city in the world, CHICAGO (apartment tour to come).

To tie in with my new Chicago home, my next “What’s in HER bag” features Jill Badlotto, one of the fabulous bloggers behind Jess & Jill and the social producer for the Chicago Blogger Network.

For this edition of “What’s in HER bag,” SITNB readers will not only get to peak inside Jill’s makeup bag….but also some of her favorite ways to have fun in the Windy City.

FYI: Jill and I are not responsible for your Sephora shopping haul after taking a peak inside her bag.

(Jill’s products are in constant rotation in her bag, but these are currently occupying it)

Inside her bag:

– Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit

SITNB: What’s your favorite beauty product of all time?
Jill: I’m a rule breaker, so I’m going to have to go with two – Bobbi Brown’s creamy concealer kit for my dark circles and Anastasia Clear Brow Gel. Eyebrows are the windows to the soul, and mine are my best friend.

SITNB:  If you had to pick three key beauty items what would they be?
Jill: Moisturizer with sunscreen is definitely number one. I wouldn’t be caught dead without sunscreen on! Under eye cream and a bright lipstick (for a fun pick me up) come next.

SITNB: Who is your beauty inspiration?
Jill: My mom! She barely wears any makeup but has always been an avid moisturizer/sunscreen wearer, and it shows in how gorgeous her skin is.

SITNB: What was your biggest beauty no-no (come on, we all have had them)?
Jill: I gotta go with Jena on this one, roll on glitter. So embarrassing!

SITNB: Guys want to know, how much do you really spend on makeup?
Jill: They say they want to know, but trust me, they don’t. I love a good drugstore product, but I spend a lot of money on skincare – cleanser, moisturizer, under eye cream, etc. All the makeup in the world won’t matter if you don’t take care of your skin. And of course, splurge on a good foundation!

SITNB: When did you first start wearing makeup?
Jill: I think I was around 12, but it was very minimal, usually just mascara or concealer. My under eye circles have always bugged me, so I learned from an early age how to conceal them.

SITNB: What has been your biggest beauty splurge?
Jill: Does stealing my Mom’s La Mer count? That stuff is the fountain of youth trapped in a bottle.

SITNB: Do you have a product that changed your life and/or beauty routine for the better?
Jill: My Clarisonic Mia 2. I don’t know how I survived without it! Also Josie Maran Argan Oil has helped my dry skin fight the Chicago winters.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

While I let you finish taking notes on Jill’s favorite beauty finds…here are some of Jill’s favorite Chicago places & feel good tips.

Your favorite happy hour spot: My balcony with a bottle of Champagne and my dog (he’s over 21, don’t worry.

Your favorite restaurant in Chicago: Nellcote. The decor, the food, and the drinks are A+.

Your favorite way to treat yourself: Shopping for a new pair of heels. I’m always more confident when I’m a bit taller.

Your favorite go-to meal: The Mama Depandi Bucatini at RPM Italian.

A guaranteed good night is where? RM, or anywhere that my friends are. Good company is the most important thing!

Sunless Summer: Your Guide to Self-Tanners

c600x480

One of my favorite parts of summer besides maxi dresses, the beach & outdoor dining is the sun-kissed tan this beautiful warm weather brings. But the real question is, what happens when you grow up, get a 9-5 job, or actually start caring about the condition of your skin (skin cancer, wrinkles, peeling skin)?

This is where self-tanners come in!Self-tanners have come such a long way and now come in so many different options: gels, lotions, mousses, sprays, etc. They all give that natural tan without the harmful rays from the sun or even worst….the tanning bed, which I can’t believe people still pay money for!

So in honor of the warm weather and another day closer to summer, I’ve searched and tested several self-tanners to find the best of the best!

Here’s your official guide to self-tanners this summer….

1. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare ‘Alpha Beta Glow Pads’ Anti-Aging Exfoliating Self-Tanner for Face: A self-tanning pad that helps with anti-aging and exfoliation? These pads give the perfect glow to the skin with a great treatment inside.

2. Bobbi Brown Sunless Tanning Gel for Face & Body: An oil-free and non-acnegenic tanning gel for the face and body? I’ll take it! This sunless tanning gel smells great and leaves your skin feeling smooth and most importantly, WITHOUT STREAKS.

3. Rodial ‘Brazilian Tan AIRBRUSH’ Self-Tanner:This tinted mist offers an immediate glow to the skin that develops into a perfect tan! This self-tanner offers 360-degree airbrush technology for allover coverage.

4. Lancome ‘Flash Bronzer’ Tinted Self-Tanning Leg Gel: A self-tanning gel enriched with natural caramel extract and light-reflecting micro pearls is just what you need to get the perfect bronze glow!

5. bareMinerals ‘Faux Tan’ Sunless Tanner for Face: This faux face tanner instantly dries and gives you a beautiful sun-kissed tan without any harmful rays. A mineral copper complex works to prolong the effects, while plant-derived emollients help lock in moisture.

Instructions for the perfect sunless tan: Always start with clean, dry, and smooth skin. Be sure to exfoliate and moisturize before applying self tanner. Make sure to apply all lotions, gels, and mousses thin and evenly – you can go always go back and add more!

What is your favorite self-tanner? Share in the comments above!

On my most recent visit to Blue Mercury, I decided to treat myself with a new spring beauty routine including products from some of my favorite beauty brands: NARS, Laura Mercier, Caudalie, and Oribe.

photo 2-1

Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray:  This product gives shine, control and those beach waves we want all summer long. Packaging reads – Shake. Spray on wet or dry hair. Tousle to taste and let dry in the St. Tropez air. Follow with lipstick and heels.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer: This concealer is so lightweight yet so effective! The build-able coverage is perfect for this creamy concealer available in 10 shades.  PS: You will love the luminous finish!

Caudalie Beauty Elixir: “Inspired by the “elixir of youth” used by Queen Isabelle of Hungary, this skincare smoothes features, tightens pores and provides an instant burst of radiance to the complexion.” -BlueMercury. I love this product for a nice pick-me-up throughout the day!

Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour: New to the Laura Mercier family, these lipsticks are the perfect blend of color, texture, and finish. I love the Olive Oil and Vitamin E that makes your lips feel incredibly smooth. In love with ‘Palm Beach’.

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour: Long wear. Crease proof. Beautiful color range. What more can you ask for in a travel eyeshadow stick? I purchased Sand Wash for a perfect summer color!

NARS Satin Lip Pencil: Inside this lip pencil packs high pigmented colors with a 12 hour wear. The best part? They are moisturizing your lips! PS: There are so many great shades to choose from!

Hey Chicagoland! There are Blue Mercury locations in Lincoln Park (2208 North Halsted), Southport (3512 N. Southport Avenue), Hinsdale (21 East First Street), and Highland Park (coming soon)! See you there!

Tru Ananda Skin Spa – Hinsdale

photo

Here’s the scoop: With all the hustle and bustle our 20’s bring, we often forget to take care of ourselves & more importantly, our skin.

Enter: Tru Ananda Skin Spa — A cozy chic spa (designed by f2 Designs), located in the heart of downtown Hinsdale, known for their unique and exceptional services like their Microdermabrasion and Micro Current Facials.

image

The 411: Andrea, owner of the spa, describes her Microdermabrasion service as an exfoliating technique where she uses a machine to remove dead skin cells. She uses a Dermaglow machine that is highly effective at turning over skin cells, evening out skin tones (hyperpigmentation due to sun damage or post acne marks), smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, and also helping with large pores and oil control.

What is unique about Andrea’s technique and approach is that she can customize each individual depending on their skin type (so even the most sensitive skin types are candidates).  Andrea comments that the best part of the service is, “There is no downtime with this treatment. Your skin feels clearer, smoother, more radiant, and your products work much better because they are working with new skin cells.”

The Micro Current Facial she offers is an electrotherapy that produces low electrical impulses (through metal wands) that mimic our own bioelectrical currents.  This safe, noninvasive current stimulates your muscles to lift, firm, and tone up. It reeducates your muscles to be sculpted to where they should be. This is the workout for your face and neck!  The results are accumulative, so after a series of treatments it can be considered a non-surgical facelift. Not everyone needs to do a series tho, this can be done as your facial every 4-6 weeks. As I saw, the results were instant! This treatment would be great to do before a big event!

My experience: Andrea truly made this spa experience one of the best. It was so peaceful, relaxing and personalized. Any problem I had that day, quickly went away when I walked in for my appointment. For my services, Andrea explained the benefits of a Microdermabrasion treatment for my skin and included the Micro Current as well. Both were not only relaxing, but my skin (now 1 week later) looks and feels great! The bottom line is, I have abandoned skin treatments for way too long and with Andrea’s help and guidance, I will be back in 4-6 weeks!

Tru Ananda Skin Spa also offers waxing services, eyebrow shaping, maintenance, and tinting.  The Skin Spa also offers basic facials for the gal on the go!
